Cesare Vecellio, talked about the Venetian habit washing their hair with secret dyes to give them the color and brilliance of gold in his Habiti antichi e moderni di tutto il mondo (1590). They wore solana (a loosely woven straw hat with just the brim) to sun dry their hair over the roofs, in those open-air wooden terraces called altane. Dressed in schiavonetto, a lightweight dress that covered their entire bodies, holding a mirror to check the color. It was worth the sacrifice for the Tiziano blond color!
